How our cold winter aid helps families survive the harsh Moldova winter

A freezing welcome for a new baby
When Tatiana gave birth to her daughter, she was scared to bring her home.
“I felt this incredible joy that I had brought this sweet diamond into the world. On the other hand, I felt such fear and sadness that I would be bringing this baby back to such a freezing cold house.”
It was winter in Moldova – and temperatures here drop well below freezing.
Tatiana’s family was going through a tough time. Her husband had a stroke last Spring and has been unable to work since.

Essential supplies for a family living in poverty
“When I entered their house, I was shocked,” said Andrei, the family coordinator from Mission Without Borders Moldova.
“It was as cold inside their home as it was outdoors. When I asked about what food they had for the day, the mother almost burst into tears as she showed me the empty cupboard where the food should be.”
Andrei soon returned to Tatiana’s house with briquettes for the fireplace, quality winter shoes for the family, and warm clothes and blankets.
Tatiana said, “When I saw Andrei carrying bags full of things for our family, I needed a few moments to realise that this was real, not a dream… It was a special feeling that someone cares about our family.”
Whilst our local teams can access some items locally, much of the winter clothing, shoes and blankets we are able to provide are sent as donated goods from other parts of Europe and further afield. These donated goods significantly increase our ability to help families, especially in the winter.
No more fear thanks to family sponsorship
Thanks to their sponsors, Tatiana and her family no longer have to fear going hungry and cold. Mission Without Borders’s programme of passing on donated goods has also changed their lives.
Tatiana said, “When I see the fire burning in the fireplace, it’s like the cold from my heart is melting too. I started to believe in miracles, that good still exists on this earth, not only bad.”
“No matter how hard it is, I have promised myself that I will do all I can so that my children will have a different life than what I had,” she added.
