The weight of responsibility from a young age
Albana* lives in the outskirts of Durres, Albania, with her parents and three siblings. While she may be only nine years old, her days are packed with responsibility, with little time to play or relax.
Every day after a long walk home from school, Albana looks after three-year-old Gesi and two-year-old Olivia. She feeds them, spends time with them, and puts them both to bed, and afterwards, helps her mother with chores.

Poverty impacts every part of their family life and Albana’s mother often feels overwhelmed by the challenges she faces.
“I try to help my mother as much as I can,” Albana said.
An invitation to a seaside summer camp
Because her family is enrolled on Mission Without Borders’s family sponsorship programme, Albana was given the opportunity to go to the Mission’s summer camp by the seaside.
She had never gone on holiday before – and now she would have a week filled with friendship, fun activities, plenty of good food, and Bible lessons.
Albana’s unforgettable opportunity
Summer camp gave Albana the chance to experience a carefree childhood for a little while – an experience that will have a long-term impact.
She added, “I feel free to play and spend time with my friends here without worrying about my siblings.
“This summer camp is absolutely the most unforgettable experience of my whole life!”
Arian, who provides regular support to the family, said, “Summer camp is a big event that children love to talk about once they go back to school. It’s been life changing in many ways for Albana and for many other children.”
The freedom to play is key, helping children develop social and communication skills, cognitive skills, imagination and more.
